Radiation Oncology

Radiation Oncology:

HCG is the first hospital in Gujarat to introduce Tomotherapy for the treatment of cancer. HCG was also the first to introduce the TrueBeam, India’s first advanced Radiation Therapy system with multileaf, making it the leader in cancer care. It has been operated under the supervision of the team of experienced and skilled specialists. Tomotherapy & TrueBeam deliver precise tumour targeting, lowering toxicity and improving clinical outcomes. With this advanced treatment planning technology, Radiation Oncologist at HCG treat tumors effectively minimizing side effect of radiation treatment. HCG Cancer Centre was the first hospital in India, to get approval to use the Flattening Free Filter (FFF) Mode technology.

Technology
The deparment has latest technologies for rendering accurate dose of radiation to even sub - millimeter size of target

  • Tomotherapy
Tomotherapy H is a state-of-the-art image guided and intensity modulated radiotherapy technique that is an amalgamation of Computed Tomography (CT scan) and high-energy radiotherapy. With this technology we can sculpt the X-ray to exactly match the complex shape or size of a tumour, which allows us to deliver high doses to the tumour and spare the nearby normal structures,  thereby reduce the side effects of the treatment.

The machine has the unique ability to deliver thousands of beamlets travelling in a straight line or in tangents. It confers the advantage of being able to deliver recommended radical doses of radiotherapy, even to tumours that are closely situated near critical organs.

The advanced in- built CT scanner present in the machine gives the advantage of imaging the treatment area on a daily basis, which helps the technologists to make any necessary on table adjustments, prior to the delivery of radiation, to correct any shifts or movements.

The machine then delivers radiation in a slice-by-slice manner to the tumour. This is a unique feature of Helical Tomotherapy and cannot be achieved by using any other radiotherapy machine available in this day and age.

Tomotherapy H can be used as definitive mode of treatment in newly diagnosed cancer, post operatively to reduce the risk of loco regional recurrence, and also on retreat patients in whom cancer has come back after being treated previously.
