Pain & Palliative Care

Pain & Palliative Care Clinic

What is Pain?
Pain is an uncomfortable feeling which tells you that something may be wrong in your body. It’s your body’s way of sending a warning to your brain. Pain can be steady, throbbing, stabbing, aching, pinching or can be described in different other ways. Chronic Pain itself can be considered as a disease and can also cause further physical symptoms like nausea, dizziness, weakness or drowsiness. It can cause emotional effects like anger, depression, mood swings or irritability. Perhaps most significantly, it can change your lifestyle and impact your job, relationships and independence.

Types of Pain
Pain is classified as either acute or chronic. Acute Pain is usually severe and short-lived and is often a signal that your body has been injured. Chronic Pain can range from mild to severe, is present for long periods and is often the result of a disease that may require ongoing treatment.

Not everyone with cancer experiences cancer pain, but 1 out of 3 people undergoing cancer treatment does. If you have advanced cancer — cancer that has spread or recurred — your chance of experiencing cancer pain is even higher.

Cancer pain occurs in many ways.  Your Pain may be dull, achy or sharp. It could be constant, intermittent, mild, moderate or severe.

What causes Cancer Pain?
Cancer can cause Pain by growing into or destroying tissue near the tumour. Cancer pain can come from primary cancer itself — where the disease started — or from other areas in the body where cancer has spread (metastases). As a tumour grows, it may put pressure on nerves, bones or organs, causing Pain.

Cancer pain may not just be from the physical effect of cancer on a region of the body, but also due to chemicals that cancer may release in the area of the tumour. Treatment of cancer can help the Pain in these situations.

Cancer treatments — such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery — are another potential source of cancer pain. Surgery can be painful, and it may take time to recover. Radiation may leave behind a burning sensation or painful scars.
